On my design wall – 2013.11.06

I had a lot of fun designing this quilt.  I knew I wanted the background to be white at the top, then a couple of shades of gray, and black at the bottom, with small squares and narrow strips of the challenge neon colors and a few of my other favorite colors.  As you can see, I changed some of the colors as I worked on it.

I constructed it using a very improv technique. I just started inserting strips and squares into the background colors until I had blocks approximately 10 x 10 inches square.  I arranged the blocks on the design wall, then added more fabrics to fill in the blank areas.

DSCN2862It’s all pieced now, so the next step is layering and quilting.  I will quilt it horizontally, so I can use light gray thread at the top, medium gray in the middle and dark gray or black at the bottom.

Initially I was thinking of quilting straight lines, but it occurred to me this might be a good candidate for serpentine quilting lines.  I’ve wanted to try the wavy stitch since I found instructions on how to do it with my Janome 6600.

I’m open to suggestions and opinions  . . .

  9. I love it! I purchased a Janome 6600P a few months ago. Can you tell me more about how to do the wavy stitch you refered to?

    Thanks.

  10. Beautiful Terry. I think I’d go with straight stitch lines on this for the most part. Maybe use a contrasting thread in one section with the serpentine stitch as an accent (I’m thinking using either red or chartreuse in that small black square just left of centre).

Linda, thanks for the suggestions! As you can see from my reply to Patti, I seem to be leaning toward the serpentine stitch (probably because I’m anxious to try it out). I really like your idea of a contrasting chartreuse thread in the black square. I’m thinking of binding it in chartreuse, so that would make the contrasting thread ‘pop’.

It’s going to be gorgeous. I would have said straight stitching too….but I’m wanting to see the serpentine stitch so go for it. I have a Janome 6600 also and wanted to do the serpentine stitch but couldn’t figure out how to do it.

I love your quilt! I want to do improv stitching, but honestly it looks a little overwhelming. Not knowing where I am going–guess I have a bit of “control issues”. lol I do like how you explained your start though and might just have to give it a try someday.
