On my design wall – 2014.05.28

The sailboat quilt is progressing well – I’m very happy with how it’s looking.  I’m always a little amazed when a quilt looks so much like what I had envisioned!  Sometimes if I don’t have the right colored fabrics, I have to compromise.  In this case, I’m happy with all my fabric choices.

All of the background (except the water in front of the boat) is fused to a cotton lawn foundation.  I’m going to back the hull and sails with an iron-on stabilizer (and leave it in) to prevent the background showing through.  I had planned to use a white stabilizer, but when I opened the package, I found I had purchased black stabilizer – which is going to work even better than white would have.

I still have to construct the sails, and the water in front of the boat will be wavier than it looks right now.

At this point, I’m not sure if I’m going to quilt the background first, then add the boat, or attach the boat then quilt it all at the same time.  Suggestions, anyone?

Wow–the boat quilt is looking fantastic! I always love your pictorial quilts. As for quilting, I don’t know, but maybe do the background first, and then finish the boat, so that the boat really stands out? I’m sure that whatever you decide, the results will be fabulous!

  2. I don’t have experience with this type of quilt, so I’m not sure of the best way to approach the quilting, but I had to stop by to say that your fabric choices are fantastic! I like so many of them, but I think the varied colors in the water is my favorite.

  3. Terry, as always I stand in awe of your creativity. Your sailboat quilt is coming along great! You make it look so simple. : ) I wouldn’t know which way is best to quilt this one, but I know that you will get it right. Can’t wait to see it finished!

  4. Well, I say quilt the background, then add the boat – it will add a different dimension. That’s my 2 cents worth, anyway! Love the clouds. Love them.

Wonderful piece! Love your design work and choices, such creativity, and SO inspiring! Thank you for sharing with all of us again! I love how this piece is taking shape and I too suggest that you quilt the background first. It just might push the boat forward even more with the additional texture. best, deborah

  6. Love this! In my experience if you quilt the background first make sure you have an extra layer under the boat. Sometimes the quilting stitches will show thru what you are adhering to the top. Plus with the boat hull white you might see the design. That is just from my experience.

  7. How beautiful! I love your color choices too! I always run into the same dilemma, what to quilt when. It seems I never do it the same way. I’m not sure what I would do but I can see quilting everything else first.

This has such energy, Terry … Beautiful! I would consider adding the hull of the boat then quilt the background then add the mast and sails as almost dimensional aspects 🙂 can’t wait to see it completed.
