Bits and pieces of news – 2016.10.12

Bits and pieces of news . . .

The Fibre Art Network (FAN) annual networking retreat was held last week in Winnipeg.  We spent four days sharing our work and inspiration with each other, shopping, touring local galleries, walking in the woods, eating, drinking and talking.  It was an opportunity to re-connect with old friends, and to make new ones.  We shared information, talked about our progress as artists, and made plans for new group exhibitions.  We had a couple of workshops to get our creative juices flowing.

The first was Art Journaling with Heidi Hunter of Runs with Scissors.  We each received a Sharpie and a sketchbook, and Heidi took us through some fun drawing exercises.  Here are my sketches.

We also had a Zentangles workshop taught by Carol of Tangled Inklings.   We each got a 4 x 4 inch card tile, and Carol took us step-by-step through the process of making Zentangle art.  Here is my tile, and the tiles of all the participants – looks like a quilt!

The newest Fibre Art Network (FAN) exhibition Ekphrastic opened at the La Conner Quilt and Textile Museum on October 5th.  The Ekphastric exhibition is a unique showcase of the collective talents of Canadian poets and fibre artists.

This Saturday, October 15th in the afternoon is the artists reception, and many of the artists (and hopefully some of the poets) will be there to speak about their work.  I hope to go down, but it will depend on whether the approaching storm is as fierce as is being predicted.

You can see the poems and the fiber art here.  My piece is ‘The Edge of the Pond‘.  You can read about how I made it here.

The annual SAQA online auction is over.  It was the most success auction in SAQA’s history, with more than 370 quilts sold, raising over $75,000!  The money raised will help provide a world of opportunity and exposure for art quilts and the artists who create them!

You can see all of the quilts here.

My contribution ‘Koi Pond‘ was the prototype for ‘The Edge of the Pond‘.

The Bloggers Quilt Festival is over and the winners have been announced.  I’m thrilled to say that one of my entries won a prize!  ‘Eclipse‘ won in the Mini quilt category. My prize is The Quilter’s Planner + a QP Mini from The Quilters Planner!
