On my design wall – 2013.05.15

I’ve finished the VMQG logo colors group quilt.  I quilted vertical lines with aqua thread, and horizontal lines with orange thread, to give it a plaid look.  The binding is pieced from leftover pieces of several of the logo colors.  I used my favorite label technique – creating the label in Excel then printing it on an inkjet fabric sheet and fusing it to the quilt back.

DSCN0836I also made 3 entries for the newest VMQG block challenge.  It’s a really cool method for  sewing hexagons by machine, as taught by Jacquie Gering.  You can see Jacquie’s tutorial here.

I’m intrigued with Jacquie’s technique and definitely want to try this.  I don’t win the block lottery at the guild meeting, I’ll have to make some more for myself.

By the way, Jacquie has a new course oo Craftsy – Improvisational Piecing, Modern Design.  (I love watching Craftsy videos while hand-sewing hanging sleeves onto my quilts.)

I’m working on the red bench quilt and plan to have some progress to show later today.

As always, I’m linking up with these blogs for WiP Wednesday.  Click on the buttons below to see all the people participating and check out their projects.

  1. Hexagons by machine. I guess lots of y seams. I have to admit that I enjoyed the whole process of hand sewing them while I watched TV, that doing them by machine didn’t occur to me. But, I can see how knowing how to do that would be a good thing, and also how it would work well in a Modern quilt.

Your group quilt looks so great! I love different colors of threads in the quilting – it adds such a great sparkle to the quilt. Have fun with those hexagons and thanks for the “craftsy while hand sewing” idea – there is never enough time for everything otherwise. I must get better at multitasking!

  3. Group quilt came out wonderful! I did a hexagon with over 1,000 pieces, I so wish I new about doing it by machine!!!

  4. I have steered clear of hexies so far…lol

  5. Love the plaid look of quilting on the group quilt. Haven’t had a chance to watch any Craftsy videos yet. I have a bunch bookmarked though!

You did a great job on the quilt Terry. Looking forward to seeing it in person.
