My local fibre art group, FYBR 2RT, recently issued a challenge to create a 12 x 12 inch piece using one of the semi-transparent organza fabrics that were distributed to each of us. When the box of fabric squares was passed around, I noticed one of them reminded me of the colors of an eco-printed silk scarf I made several years ago. I liked how the geometric shapes of the organza contrasted with the natural leaf shapes of the eco-print.

I combined the organza and silk with several coordinating cotton fabrics into one of my favourite patterns – intersecting circles. Because the fabrics were semi-transparent, I used white felt for the batting layer.
I quilted a curved-line grid, to complement the circular shapes. I used a curved strip of freezer paper as a guide.

It’s mounted on a black 12″ x 12″ wrapped canvas. The muted neutral colours remind me of the frosty shades of winter, so I have titled it ‘Solstice Moon‘.
