Tree quilt – chapter 2

Lots of progress on the blue tree quilt since my last post.

I have most of the foliage cut and pinned to the pattern on the design wall.  I still think it looks fine with just the one fabric for the foliage (although I have used 4 different yellow fabrics for the sky and 3 chartreuse fabrics for the trunk and branches).  I’ve pinned up a few triangles of yellow for sky showing through the foliage.

I’m continuing to gather fabrics for the background and foreground.  As soon as I have all the fabric for the top part cut and pinned, I’ll start auditioning fabrics for the bottom.

I’m starting to think about a title for this quilt.  So far I’ve come up with:

  • Blue Tree (not very imaginative!)
  • Sunshine on a Blue Tree
  • Blue Tree on a Sunny Day
  • What Season is This?

I’d love to hear some suggestions for quilt titles!

On my design wall

I got back from the Houston International Quilt Festival on Friday night.  I had a fantastic time, but now I’m back to reality.  I’ve been unpacking, and trying to get caught up.  I have several projects with deadlines, so my umbrella people will have to wait for a while.

Kona Modern quilt – I finished piecing this quilt before I left for Houston.  It has to be quilted and bound for our next guild meeting, when our guild challenge is due.

Blue tree quilt – I finalized the drawing of the tree top, and took it to FedEx/Kinkos to create a full -size drawing.  I’ll finalize the design of the bottom of the quilt later.

I’ve been gathering fabrics for this quilt.  So far I haven’t found any for the foliage, other than the original fabric that inspired this quilt.  Usually I like a scrappy look (for the Spring Blossoms quilt, I used 5 different pink and white fabrics for the large tree), but this fabric has such a great range of values, I’m going to try using just the one fabric for the foliage.  I always cut out and pin up all my fabric pieces before I start sewing, so I can always add some other fabrics later if I don’t like the look of just one fabric.

WiP Wednesday from my Houston hotel room

I’m in Houston for the International Quilt Market and Festival (see my recent posts for details).  Today I have nothing scheduled for the morning, and the exhibits and quilt show will not be open until 5 pm.  In anticipation that I might have (or want) some quiet time in my hotel room, I brought some fabric, fusible web and sketches I’ve been planning to turn into quilts.  Here’s what I made this morning.  I just used a newspaper as the background because I didn’t have the right fabric, but I really like the look of it.

Houston – Day 5

The IQA Winners’ Circle Celebration was held tonight.  Of course, all the quilts were fabulous!  You can see a list of all the winners here.

The ceiling of the ballroom had colored lights playing on fabric swags.  The first place quilts in each category were hung on the walls of the ballroom, hidden behind black draperies until each winner was announced and their quilt was revealed.  After all the winners had been announced, we all got to look at the quilts up close, and admire the intricate workmanship.

Houston – Days 3 and 4

Yesterday was my 3rd day in Houston at Quilt Market.  I met my Vancouver friends, Karen and Liz, and we finished going through the 500+ vendor booths.  Then we headed over to the quilts, were I showed them my four quilts that are on display at the show.

Here are two of them at the show.  The quilt next to ‘Spring Blossoms’ is ‘Hollyhock Cottage’ by my friend Sally Manke.

Then we looked at lots of the other quilts.  I still haven’t seen them all, but I’ll go back later this week, and I will see them all before I leave!

In the afternoon, I joined my Houston friend, Robin, and we left with her husband Randy on a road trip to Austin.  We drove through beautiful Texas scenery.  We stayed overnight in Austin, which is a beautiful city, then today we visited the Texas Quilt Museum.  Robin and Randy treated me to some Texas-style food, incuding fried green tomatos, catfish and okra . . . mmm.

Then back to Quilt Market for a lecture by Angela Walters.  Here’s a sample of her fabulous machine quilting that she showed during the lecture.

Quilt Market is over now, but Quilt Festival is about to start.  Tomorrow I will attend 2 classes, and the IQA Winners Circle Celebration.

Houston – Day 2

Great day!  I met up with my friends from Vancouver and we saw 19  of the 23 aisles of exhibitors’ booths.  Check out the swag from today.  And notice the Studios magazine on the left – it includes a 3-page spread about MY quilt studio!

We also took time to see some of the many fabulous quilts on display.   I took lots of photos on my iPhone, but I will go back and take better ones with the camera.

Here are some shots of an exhibit I’m really pleased to see – Canadian Content, by the Fibre Art Network.  A lot of time and energy went into getting this exhibit to Houston!

This evening we attended the Modern Quilt Guild meet and greet, where we met more quilters, including a few online buddies – it’s always great to meet online friends in person!

Tomorrow – more exhibits, more quilts, more friends.

Houston – Day 1

I flew down from Vancouver to Houston today for the International Quilt Market and Festival.   This evening I met up with some friends from Vancouver and from Houston. We attended Fabric 2.0 a meet and greet event, and then the Sample Spree.  I came back to my hotel room with quite a haul, most of it complimentary!

Tomorrow the exhibits open, and in the evening I’ll attend the Modern Quilt Guild meetup.  There are lots of class every day, but I’m not enrolled in any until early next week.

Here’s some great street art I saw today, and some downtown buildings with interesting reflections of other buildings.

On my design wall

My Kona fabric finally arrived in the mail, so I’ve been working on my guild challenge.  Here’s the Kona Modern print that I received, plus the solids I ordered.

I started with a wonky center square and just added to it without a real plan for the finished quilt.  Once it was about 25″ square, I looked at a couple of options on my design wall.

The on-point arrangement just didn’t work for me, so I’m going with the second design.  I love using an improv, wonky process, because it goes together so quickly – no precise measuring required!

I haven’t done much on the tree quilt, and it will probably be a couple of weeks before I have anything to show, as I’m off to Houston on Friday for the International Quilt Market and Festival.

On my design wall

During this past week, I finished the mixed media piece, with silk leaves.

I love the gorgeous batik fabric and the vibrant autumn shades of the silk leaves.  I quilted the background with vertical lines, then tacked the silk leaves in place, then free-motion quilted along the vein lines.

I’m still waiting for my coordinating Kona solids to arrive in the mail, so I can get started on the Kona Modern Quilts challenge – the finished quilt is due at our guild meeting next month!

While I’m waiting, though, I’ve started working on an art quilt.  For the past couple of months I’ve been focusing mostly on modern quilts, so it will be good to get back to an art quilt.

This will be a big project, so will take several weeks to complete.  I’ll take some breaks and work on other smaller projects during the construction of the tree quilt, so I’m posting about it in a separate series of posts – here’s the first one.
