{"id":1938,"date":"2014-04-06T14:37:12","date_gmt":"2014-04-06T21:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/?p=1938"},"modified":"2014-04-06T14:37:12","modified_gmt":"2014-04-06T21:37:12","slug":"weekend-finish-2014-04-06","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/2014\/04\/06\/weekend-finish-2014-04-06\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekend finish &#8211; 2014.04.06"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Skybridge quilt is finished!\u00a0 It&#8217;s 35 x 52 inches.\u00a0 I started working on it just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/2014\/04\/02\/on-my-design-wall-2014-04-02\/\" target=\"_blank\">2 weeks ago<\/a>, so it went together very quickly &#8211; although that doesn&#8217;t include the time I spent thinking about and designing it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-1948\" alt=\"TerryAske_Swoop\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop.jpg?resize=450%2C651\" width=\"450\" height=\"651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop.jpg?resize=708%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 708w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop.jpg?resize=207%2C300&amp;ssl=1 207w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop.jpg?w=1901&amp;ssl=1 1901w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop.jpg?w=1280 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s based on a photo I took of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skybridge_%28TransLink%29\" target=\"_blank\">Skybridge<\/a> (part of the Vancouver rapid transit system).\u00a0 I&#8217;m so pleased that I could recreate in fabric what was in the photo and in my head.\u00a0 The sense of distance and perspective from this point of view really appealed to me, as well as the contrast of the straight, diagonal and curved lines.\u00a0 But most of all, I love the curve it makes as it swoops down and out over the river.\u00a0 I&#8217;m going to title it &#8220;Swoop&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I fused the various bridge units in place using 1\/4\u2033 or 1\/2\u2033 strips of fusible web around the edges of each unit.\u00a0 Many quilters use glue to hold their applique in place &#8211; I find fusible strips on the edges is less messy to work with.\u00a0 However, I realized this wasn&#8217;t really going to keep the units in place during the quilting process, as I rolled and tugged and manipulated the quilt.<\/p>\n<p>So I decided to stitch the outlines of all the bridge components <em>before<\/em> layering the quilt with batting and backing.\u00a0 This meant I didn&#8217;t have to bury all those thread ends.\u00a0 It also made it easier to use my walking foot to stitch, thus avoiding problems with skipped <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop_detail.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1950\" alt=\"TerryAske_Swoop_detail\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop_detail.jpg?resize=300%2C242\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop_detail.jpg?resize=300%2C242&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop_detail.jpg?resize=1024%2C829&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop_detail.jpg?w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/TerryAske_Swoop_detail.jpg?w=1920 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>stitches in the areas with many layers of fabric.\u00a0 I stitched the bridge components to the background with black thread, and the towers with dark gray.<\/p>\n<p>Then I layered the quilt top with batting and backing, and quilted the sky, clouds and distant hills.\u00a0 I added additional details to the bridge with black thread, and stitched around the edges again.
