{"id":2279,"date":"2014-11-08T14:12:52","date_gmt":"2014-11-08T22:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/?p=2279"},"modified":"2025-12-07T19:26:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T03:26:06","slug":"off-my-design-wall-a-project-start-to-finish-and-a-tutorial-2014-11-08","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/2014\/11\/08\/off-my-design-wall-a-project-start-to-finish-and-a-tutorial-2014-11-08\/","title":{"rendered":"Off my design wall &#8211; a project start to finish and a tutorial &#8211; 2014.11.08"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I usually show my progress on a quilt through several posts, but I didn&#8217;t blog about this one because it was going to be juried.\u00a0 It&#8217;s now been accepted for the exhibition, so I&#8217;ll show my entire process &#8211; start to finish &#8211; in one post.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s for a new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fibreartnetwork.com\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fibre Art Network<\/a> exhibition, titled &#8216;Canadiana&#8217;.\u00a0 All pieces are 18 inches wide, and the length is anywhere from 24 to 54 inches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/original-photo.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2367 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/original-photo.jpg?resize=134%2C179\" alt=\"original photo\" width=\"134\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/original-photo.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/original-photo.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/original-photo.jpg?w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/original-photo.jpg?w=1920 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 134px) 100vw, 134px\" \/><\/a>I had initially thought I would make another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/2012\/06\/27\/hello-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vancouver cityscape<\/a>, but the 18 inch width was feeling restrictive.\u00a0 Then I remembered a photo I took a couple of years ago of the Lions Gate Bridge as we walked along the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tourbytransit.com\/vancouver\/things-to-do\/stanleypark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stanley Park seawall<\/a>.\u00a0 It fits the vertical format much better than a cityscape.\u00a0 I love the teal tones of the bridge, and wanted to use realistic colors for that.\u00a0 But I decided to make the sky a warmer lavender-blue shade for better contrast.<\/p>\n<p>I won&#8217;t make you read all the way to the bottom to see the finished quilt &#8211; here it is.\u00a0 (But if you&#8217;re interested in how I made my full size pattern and how I constructed the quilt, continue reading.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Aske_Terry_An_Air_of_Elegance.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2364\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Aske_Terry_An_Air_of_Elegance.jpg?resize=460%2C1024\" alt=\"Aske_Terry_An_Air_of_Elegance\" width=\"460\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Aske_Terry_An_Air_of_Elegance.jpg?resize=460%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 460w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Aske_Terry_An_Air_of_Elegance.jpg?w=1274&amp;ssl=1 1274w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As usual, I used <a href=\"http:\/\/picasa.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Picasa<\/a> to edit the photo.\u00a0 I cropped it, lightened it, then used the &#8216;pencil sketch&#8217; effect to get a line drawing.\u00a0 I printed that version of the photo on letter size paper and used a pencil to fill in a few missing details.<\/p>\n<p>I like to have a full-size pattern and a full-size mirror image pattern.\u00a0 I use the full-size pattern to position the various pieces, and I use the mirror image to trace pattern pieces onto freezer paper and\/or paper-backed fusible web.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve found a nifty way to get both patterns. I photocopy my line drawing onto a product called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.softexpressions.com\/software\/notions\/Fundation.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fun-dation<\/a>. It&#8217;s a semi-transparent foundation material that comes in letter size sheets and can be run through a printer.\u00a0 Because it&#8217;s semi-transparent, you can see the mirror image on the reverse side of the sheet.\u00a0 The image can be photocopied and enlarged from either side of the foundation sheet.\u00a0 (The reverse side is a little fainter, so the printer may need to be set to a darker setting.)\u00a0 My printer can take 11 x 17 inch paper so for this pattern I enlarged my images by 400% and printed the full-size pattern on 4 pieces of paper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/pencil-sketch-effect.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2369\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/pencil-sketch-effect-127x300.jpg?resize=127%2C300\" alt=\"pencil sketch effect\" width=\"127\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/pencil-sketch-effect.jpg?resize=127%2C300&amp;ssl=1 127w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/pencil-sketch-effect.jpg?resize=435%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 435w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/pencil-sketch-effect.jpg?w=1385&amp;ssl=1 1385w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/pencil-sketch-effect.jpg?w=1280 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 127px) 100vw, 127px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/selecting-fabrics.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2361\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/selecting-fabrics.jpg?resize=250%2C300\" alt=\"selecting fabrics\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/selecting-fabrics.jpg?resize=250%2C300&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/selecting-fabrics.jpg?resize=854%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 854w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/selecting-fabrics.jpg?w=1790&amp;ssl=1 1790w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/selecting-fabrics.jpg?w=1280 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I used a similar process to what I used for &#8216;Swoop&#8217; &#8211; my quilt of the Skybridge.\u00a0 (And it was so easy to look back on my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/2014\/04\/02\/on-my-design-wall-2014-04-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a> and read about my process &#8211; I didn&#8217;t have to wrack my brain to remember what I did and why.)\u00a0 As with &#8216;Swoop&#8217;, the larger parts were constructed from freezer paper templates with edges folded under and the smaller parts were fused raw edge appliqu\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/building-crossbraces.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2362\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/building-crossbraces.jpg?resize=104%2C104\" alt=\"building crossbraces\" width=\"104\" height=\"104\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/building-crossbraces.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/building-crossbraces.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=104%2C104 208w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/building-crossbraces.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=104%2C104 312w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 104px) 100vw, 104px\" \/><\/a>The fused units were constructed on parchment paper laid over the pattern. I usually think about this while making the quilt and jot down descriptive words and phrases as they occur to me. I also did some internet research about the history of the bridge. Several sites used the words elegant and graceful to describe the bridge and that really resonated with me. On the day of the deadline for entry I still hadn&#8217;t decided on a title.\u00a0 As I was writing the artist&#8217;s statement, editing my description down to 50 words, I used the phrase &#8216;air of elegance&#8217; and decided that would be my title.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Lions Gate Bridge has been an iconic landmark of Vancouver BC since 1938.\u00a0\u00a0 Its striking teal colour and slender metal structural towers lend it an air of elegance.
