background &#8211; 2017.07.10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m working on the background for a new art quilt, and decided to try some techniques that are new to me.\u00a0 I decided to make the sky and water portions from strips of fabric cut freehand with a rotary cutter &#8211; but no ruler, and sewn with raw edges &#8211; no fusible web.\u00a0 I just ironed the strips to a piece of batting, overlapping them and stitched along the edges.<\/p>\n<p>I liked the look, but the fabrics frayed more than I had hoped.\u00a0 If I had used batiks or more tightly woven fabrics, that would have been less of a problem, but I selected the fabrics by color and pattern, not by weave.\u00a0 (I&#8217;m particularly pleased with the plaid and flower fabrics for sky, and touchs of purple.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-strips-fraying.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-4079\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-strips-fraying.jpg?resize=640%2C920\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-strips-fraying.jpg?resize=712%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 712w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-strips-fraying.jpg?resize=209%2C300&amp;ssl=1 209w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-strips-fraying.jpg?resize=768%2C1105&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-strips-fraying.jpg?w=1890&amp;ssl=1 1890w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-strips-fraying.jpg?w=1280 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I considered adding more strips, possibly with fusible web to control the fraying.\u00a0 Then I remembered that bias-cut edges don&#8217;t fray!\u00a0 So, for the sky portion I cut smaller pieces as &#8216;clouds&#8217;, cutting the fabrics diagonally so the edges were on the bias.\u00a0 I positioned them to cover the worst of the fraying and used a bit of glue to hold them in place.\u00a0 Then I added a lot more wavy horizontal stitching lines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-with-bias-clouds.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4081\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-with-bias-clouds.jpg?resize=640%2C640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-with-bias-clouds.jpg?w=823&amp;ssl=1 823w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-with-bias-clouds.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-with-bias-clouds.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/background-with-bias-clouds.jpg?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And for the water portion, I added &#8216;waves&#8217;
