2018.03.07"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At any given time, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fibreartnetwork.com\/exhibitionsnew.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fibre Art Network<\/a> has several exhibitions traveling to various venues, and one or more in the planning stages.\u00a0 At the end of 2016, a new exhibit titled <em>&#8216;Conversations<\/em>&#8216; was announced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8216;Conversations&#8217; will be an exhibition based on a conversation between two artists working together.\u00a0 The concept is that the two partners will engage in a conversation about their works.\u00a0 Each pair of artists must agree on <\/em><em>their subject matter (the two pieces must relate or respond to each other as a unit) and on <\/em><em>the size and orientation of the two pieces (they must both be the same).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I immediately contacted my fibre artist sister, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/todyeforart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anne de Verteuil<\/a>.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve worked on collaborative projects in the past; we enjoy collaborating and we work well together.\u00a0 We were partners for another Fibre Art Network exhibition <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fibreartnetwork.com\/exhibitionsnew\/Abstracted\/24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;<em>Abstracted<\/em>&#8216;<\/a> and on a piece we called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/2015\/12\/05\/and-then-we-set-it-on-fire-2015-12-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;FIRE: an Element&#8217;<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 We have a work in progress titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/2016\/07\/20\/working-in-progress-2016-07-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;WATER: an Element&#8217;<\/a>, but for a variety of reasons it has yet to be completed.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Anne agreed to partner with me for &#8216;<em>Conversations<\/em>&#8216;, and we started thinking about what our topic should be.\u00a0 We had lots of time to decide, as the entry deadline wasn&#8217;t until early 2018.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 * \u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0 * \u00a0 * \u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>Then in January 2017, our Dad passed away.\u00a0 As we were cleaning out his belongings, it occurred to us that Dad should be the subject of our &#8216;<em>Conversations<\/em>&#8216; pieces.\u00a0 We would each make a fibre portrait of Dad commemorating his life. \u00a0Anne would create \u201cYoung Jack\u201d and I would create &#8220;Older Jack&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Young Jack&#8221; ties and shirts, as well as his favorite sweater vest, which we both had mended several times.\u00a0 <em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over the next 10 months, we collaborated in person, by phone, texting and email.\u00a0\u00a0 We discussed various techniques. We talked about colour values, colour symbolism and Dad&#8217;s lifelong struggle with depression and anxiety. We sent each other photos of our progress. Our design and construction ideas evolved as we shared ideas.<\/p>\n<p>We reminisced about conversations we had with Dad. He loved debating \u2013 politics, philosophy, world events, and the activities of his children. He loved writing &#8211; private thoughts in his journals, personal affirmations and inspirational quotes on the back of business cards, long letters to his family members.\u00a0 We used some of his writings in our pieces &#8211; and we printed them all on pieces cut from his white shirts.<\/p>\n<p>Dad&#8217;s writings were often philosophical and introspective, which inspired our title:\u00a0 &#8220;<strong>Jack: Conversations with Myself<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here are the two finished pieces.\u00a0 They will hang next to each other in the FAN &#8216;<em>Conversations<\/em>&#8216; Anne hand dyed some of the shirt fabric to get the colors and values she wanted for the face.\u00a0 In the background, she included a letter he sent to his parents in 1947 describing life in BC, and images of envelopes and stamps from that year.\u00a0 These are printed on shirt fabric.<\/p>\n<p>For &#8220;Older Jack&#8221; I included Dad&#8217;s favorite, oft-mended sweater vest in the background.\u00a0 I printed some of the cards with his personal affirmations on shirt fabric and fused them to the sweater vest.\u00a0 I also included a poem referring to \u201cjack-stars\u201d that he had adapted and sent to me and my siblings a couple of years ago, and I hand-embroidered some \u201cjack-stars\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Working on these portraits of Dad was a very special way for us to process his passing and to celebrate his life.\u00a0 Dad was also a vocal fan of my blog.\u00a0 Whenever I published a post, he would call me to discuss the artistic merits of whatever I was working on.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t hesitate to critique or praise my work, as he thought appropriate.\u00a0 I still think of him every time I publish a post.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for stopping by.\u00a0 Today, I\u2019m linking up with these blogs \u2013 click on the links below, where you\u2019ll find many other creative and inspirational projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/needleandthreadnetwork.blogspot.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>WIP Wednesday<\/em><\/a><em> @ The Needle &amp;
