{"id":6234,"date":"2020-02-29T12:33:38","date_gmt":"2020-02-29T20:33:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/?p=6234"},"modified":"2020-02-29T12:33:38","modified_gmt":"2020-02-29T20:33:38","slug":"spring-circles-and-matchstick-quilting-2020-02-29","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/2020\/02\/29\/spring-circles-and-matchstick-quilting-2020-02-29\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring, circles and matchstick quilting &#8211; 2020.02.29"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It&#8217;s almost March, so in Vancouver our thoughts are turning to Spring flowers and Cherry Blossoms.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been working on an entry for the annual textile art exhibit <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/westvanartscouncil.ca\/event-3719450\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cherry Blossoms: A Textile Translation<\/em><\/a> which will be on display in April at the Silk Purse Arts Centre in West Vancouver.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I was working on &#8216;Circles of Hope and Joy&#8217; (see previous post), I started designing my piece for the Cherry Blossoms exhibit.  I felt like making another circle-based quilt, tall and skinny.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this design, I used Microsoft Paint to draw circles and curves.  Then I printed it out on 4 pieces of legal size paper.  I taped them together, then traced the design lines onto freezer paper (my favorite way to make templates for cutting fabrics).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Paint-print-setup.jpg?resize=640%2C510\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Paint-print-setup.jpg?w=928&amp;ssl=1 928w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Paint-print-setup.jpg?resize=300%2C239&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Paint-print-setup.jpg?resize=768%2C612&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Designing and printing with Paint<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I selected a variety of fabrics that said &#8216;Spring&#8217; to me &#8211; a beautiful floral and striped pink print fabric, a few pink and green solids, and coordinating bias tape.  Below are the fabrics pinned to my design wall, as I audition various colors of bias tape. (For fabrics where the mark doesn&#8217;t show, I would use painters tape.)  I start quilting in the center and work my way out to each side edge.  I stitch the marked lines first, one inch apart, going both up and down the quilt.  Then I go back and fill in, with somewhat random spacing between lines.  (If I think one of the lines is not straight enough, I just ignore it and keep quilting.  When I have quilted across the whole quilt, if any lines bother me, I&#8217;ll pick out all or part of that line and re-quilt it.  But usually, they all look fine.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is my finished art quilt &#8216;<strong>Shades of Pink<\/strong>&#8216;.  It is 12 x 31 inches.
