all fusing completed\" width=\"300\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Courtenay-all-fusing-completed.jpg?resize=300%2C283&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Courtenay-all-fusing-completed.jpg?resize=1024%2C968&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Courtenay-all-fusing-completed.jpg?w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Courtenay-all-fusing-completed.jpg?w=1920 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I constructed the dog in units &#8211; head, paws, neck\/collar, body &#8211; then fused them all together.\u00a0 Then I decided on the background.\u00a0 I really like the slanted lines of the deck she&#8217;s lying on, and I liked the teal-green color of the pillow behind her in the original photo, so I used that color for the deck.\u00a0 Even more important than the color, was to find the right values.\u00a0 The background is more subdued gray-blue.\u00a0 Here is Courtenay&#8217;s portrait with all the fabrics fused.<\/p>\n<p>The way I quilt my dog portraits is to do all the thread sketching on the dog before I layer the quilt batting and backing.\u00a0 This has three advantages:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li><em>I&#8217;m free motion quilting through fewer layers &#8211; which is good because I usually have several layers of fabric and fusible web to sew through.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I don&#8217;t have to be concerned about any messy thread ends on the back of my work &#8211; so I can use my machine&#8217;s thread cutter button, and don&#8217;t have to bury the thread ends.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>It also gives a dimensional quality to the dog&#8217;s head &#8211; when I quilt the background after layering the batting and backing, the area surrounding the dog is flattened and the dog&#8217;s face and body are slightly raised.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I draw my thread sketching lines first to make sure they will give the correct impression of dog fur.\u00a0 I used Picasa&#8217;s pencil sketch feature to get a good look at the direction of Courtenay&#8217;s fur.\u00a0 I printed the pencil sketch image and drew my thread sketching lines in marker pen.\u00a0 I referred to the drawing while stitching.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Courtenay-pencil-sketch1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-944\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Courtenay-pencil-sketch1.jpg?resize=186%2C183\" alt=\"Courtenay-pencil sketch\" width=\"186\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Courtenay-pencil-sketch1.jpg?resize=300%2C294&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Courtenay-pencil-sketch1.jpg?w=462&amp;ssl=1 462w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Courtenay-plan-for-thread-sketching.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-941\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.terryaskeartquilts.com\/Studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Courtenay-plan-for-thread-sketching.jpg?resize=173%2C184\" alt=\"Courtenay -
